These DIY spreads or healthy dips are made of fresh and basic ingredients easily available in your pantry or the supermarket. You can experiment to your heart’s content with the taste, color and texture – as per your mood.

1. The Basic Pesto

This one is a clear winner. Hardly any ingredients and you have a super healthy and delicious dip ready in no time!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves (sweet basil leaves are preferred)
  • A quarter cup extra virgin olive oil
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Method

  • Blend the fresh sweet basil to a coarse paste while pouring the olive oil while the processor in running.
  • Add the salt and lemon juice.
  • You can refrigerate this in an air tight container.

2. Garlicky Feta Spread

This one has the goodness of the heart healthy garlic well combined with the deep taste of the crumbly feta.  

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh oregano leaves (you can use the dried one also)
  • 2 small garlic cloves
  • A quarter cup extra virgin olive oil
  • Half cup crumbled feta cheese

Method

  • Blend the oregano and garlic in a food processor.
  • Now start pouring the olive oil while the processor is running.
  • Bring the ingredients in a finely chopped state.
  • Now add the feta and blend for around ten more second.
  • Refrigerate this in an air tight container.

3. Avocado Lemon Spread

Avocado is considered a superfood with various health benefits. They are said to contain more potassium than bananas. They are also known to be loaded with heart healthy monosaturated fatty acids.

Avocados are loaded with fibers. It is also said that eating avocados can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In addition, lemon contains a host of antioxidants excellent for your well being! So here we go!

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados, pitted and peeled
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • A pinch of chilli flakes or red chilli powder

Method

  • Add the lemon juice, salt and chilli flakes to the avocado pulp and mash until the mixture is combined well.
  • Use it over bread slices or with fresh fruits or vegetables sticks.
  • Refrigerate this in an air tight container.

4. The Greek Tzatziki Spread

Ingredients

  • 2 medium finely diced cucumbers
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill leaves
  • 2 cups Greek yogurt
  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • A pinch of salt

Method

  • Add all the ingredients in a bowl and mix nicely.
  • Chill it in the refrigerator for some time before serving.

5. Zucchini and Nutmeg Spread

This one is a spread ruled by health friendly vegetables, loved not only by vegetarians but any one who is health conscious or a weight watcher! Here we go!

Ingredients

  • 4 medium size grated zucchini
  • 1 large onion
  • 3 cloves of crushed garlic
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • A quarter teaspoon nutmeg
  • Quarter teaspoon salt
  • A quarter teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice

Method

  • Cut onions finely and lightly fry them over medium heat.
  • Add the crushed garlic and fry some more.
  • Now add the grated zucchini and fry for one more minute.
  • Add all the spices and salt and leave it to simmer for around half an hour.
  • Blend it to a smooth paste in a food processor when the mixture cools.

All the above Healthy dips or spreads and dips can be conveniently stored in glass jars or air tight containers and refrigerated for over a month.

The use of extra virgin olive in these make them a healthy and tasty alternative for your usual fat and calorie laden dips, and they can be used on a regular basis.
