10 Food Myths About Healthy Eating Ready To Be Busted

Myths-About-Healthy-Eating

A lot has been said about healthy eating and dietary changes that lead to a healthier lifestyle. But not everything that you read and watch is true.

We tend to follow miscellaneous dietary counsel, like following a new diet plan or eating just salad or options like intermittent fasting which can be harmful in the long run.

Not only this we sometimes spend more than the required hours in the gym pushing ourselves to drop that extra sweat, but are these habits really healthy?

So what should we do? Actually, we should not believe in everything that we see and read.

We need to delve deep into everything and decide if a particular weight loss or health advice is actually worth following up on.

By believing these myths we end up making enormous mistakes in our journey to healthy living.

Here are a few mistakes that everyone should absolutely avoid while trying to eat healthily.

1. Organic Food is More Healthy

Eating anything that is organic is not okay. Organic snacks eaten in excess, thinking that they are healthy, can cause you more harm than good. An organic chocolate syrup would remain chocolate syrup at the end of the day.

2. You Have to Count Calories to Lose Weight

Stop getting caught up in the number of calories and instead focus on where you are getting them, consuming 100 calories worth of cupcakes, soda, or French fries is not the same as eating 100 calories of vegetables or brown rice,

If you are mindful and consume the vitamins and minerals your body needs, you will be able to drop pounds without becoming obsessive about calorie counting.

3. Salads are Always the Healthiest Options on the Menu

Salads are indeed healthy but all the toppings and dressings that are later added to it like mayonnaise etc. have fats and are high on the calorie count. These high-calorie products can cause you more than those fries that you are trying to avoid.

So try to avoid those creamy sweetened toppings in a salad and go healthy.

4. Eating Fat will Make You Fat

One of the biggest myths that all of us believe in. Actually, what kind of fat you are eating makes a big difference.

We should try and opt for healthy fats that promote cardiovascular health, monounsaturated and essential fatty acids.

5. Going Vegetarian will Help You Lose Weight

Vegetarians also gain weight and eat foods that can cause weight gain. They might eat foods that have fewer calories than meat but that doesn’t mean they don’t eat fatty foods. For instance, Mac and cheese can cause more harm than grilled chicken.

6. Eating After 6 pm Causes Weight Gain

It doesn’t matter how late you eat, but rather what you eat. If you eat more calories than your body needs, you will gain weight—even if dinner was at 5 p.m. The problem is, most people who eat late at night are starved and wind up overeating.

7. Salt Should be Restricted

Despite modestly lowering blood pressure, reducing salt/sodium does not reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes or death. The salt myth is still alive and kicking, even though there has never been any good scientific support for it.

Although lowering salt can reduce blood pressure by 1-5 mm/Hg on average, it doesn’t have any effect on heart attacks, strokes or death.

Of course, if you have a medical condition like salt-sensitive hypertension then you may be an exception. But the public health advice that everyone should lower their salt intake is not based on evidence.

8. Egg Yolks Should be Avoided

We have been advised to cut back on whole eggs because the yolks are high in cholesterol. However, cholesterol in the diet has a remarkably little effect on cholesterol in the blood, at least for the majority of people.

Studies have shown that eggs raise the “good” cholesterol and don’t raise the risk of heart disease. Whole eggs really are among the most nutritious foods and almost all the nutrients are found in the yolks.

Despite eggs being high in cholesterol, they do not raise blood cholesterol or increase heart disease risk for the majority of people.

9. Low Carb Diet is Good for You

Your brain needs carbs to function. Your brain doesn’t need refined carbs like white bread, pasta, candy, and cookies. The best sources of healthy carbohydrates are whole grains, veggies, and fruits. What matters is where you get your carbs from.

10. Coffee Is Unhealthy and Should be Avoided

Despite being perceived as unhealthy, coffee is actually loaded with antioxidants. Numerous studies show that coffee drinkers live longer and have a lower risk of many serious diseases.

Coffee has long been considered unhealthy, mainly because of the caffeine. However, most of the studies actually show that coffee has powerful health benefits.

This may be due to the fact that coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants. Combined Coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of depression, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s.
